Wells City Badminton Club

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When and where do you play?

We play at Wells Leisure Centre, Charter Way, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2FB on Wednesday evenings from 7.00pm to 9.10pm from the beginning of September to the end of July. If you go to reception, they will direct you to the courts. We only play doubles matches with feather shuttles and these can be men’s, women’s or mixed to suit the player availability.

Q. How many members do you have and are there any age restrictions?

We have about 30 members, both men and women. There are no age restrictions. Members under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Q. What is the playing standard and do you play in leagues?

Members are expected to play to an intermediate standard or above. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate beginners or players with limited experience. We currently have one team in the North Somerset Levels League and home matches are played at Wells Leisure Centre. The Levels League is open to men and women.

Q. Can I come along for a night and see if I like it?

We welcome potential members to come along and play on a Wednesday night. The cost of the first session between 7pm to 8pm is £5, payable in cash. The cost of subsequent sessions (full evening between 7pm to 9:10pm) is £7 payable by bank transfer.

You can play up to three nights as a visitor at the discretion of the Committee and subject to meeting the required standard of play. The prospective member may join the Club if they agree to adhere to the Constitution of the Club and the Committee agrees that they have a suitable standard of play and conduct.

Q. How much does it cost?

Club night fee is £7 a session payable by bank transfer on a pay-as-you-go basis. The annual membership fee is £30, to be paid in September or at the start of your membership. The membership fee may be discounted or free for those joining later in the season, at the discretion of the Committee. We are a non-profit making club and the membership fee covers our fixed costs.

Members who participate in league matches pay a match fee and are required to register with Badminton England at their own cost

Student discounts are available.

Q. Are both the Club and individual members registered with Badminton England?

Wells City Badminton Club is affiliated with Badminton England.

Members who participate in the League are required to register with Badminton England and provide their membership number to the Team Captain.

For all other members, registration with Badminton England is optional. However, it should be noted that if you decided not to register with Badminton England, you are accepting responsibility for your own insurance. You will only be covered by the sports centre's insurance if the centre has been negligent. Wells City Badminton Club will not accept any liability for any incidents or accidents.

Q. Can I come along as a visitor but don’t intend to be become a member?

Players occasionally approach the Club when they are only in the area for a limited period, returning home from full-time education, play for a club with a shorter season or for similar reasons. If they are of a suitable standard, they can play as a visitor for a maximum of six club nights, after which payment of the membership fee would be required. The visitor fee is £7 payable in cash.

Q. How is the club run?

The club has a committee, annually elected at the AGM towards the end of the season.
